What God Says About Who You Are
Think about the names you answer to in a single day. Mom. Babe. Hey, can you. The one who always knows where the charger is. The one who remembers the dentist appointment, the birthday, the permission slip, the thing your mother-in-law said in 2019.
Some of those names are sweet. Some are heavy. And some of them, if we're honest, came from voices that were never kind: a parent who was hard to please, a relationship that left you smaller, a mirror you've been arguing with since middle school.
In our last two posts, we talked about how you are more than what you accomplish, and how comparison lies about your worth. This week, we want to go one step further. If you're not what you do, and you're not who you measure against, then who are you?
Good news: you don't have to figure that out on your own. God has already said.
1. You were made on purpose
“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:13-14
Knitting is slow, careful, personal work. Nobody knits by accident. David is saying that before anyone had an opinion about you, God was already paying close attention, stitch by stitch.
That includes the parts of you you'd quietly return if you could. Your personality, your sensitivity, the way your mind works, the way you love. You are not a rough draft God is still disappointed in. You are His work, and He calls it wonderful.
2. You were made for something
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
We looked at this verse a few weeks ago, and it's worth coming back to. The word for handiwork carries the idea of a masterpiece. Not a product. Not a tool. A piece of art with a purpose.
Your purpose doesn't have to look impressive to be real. It might look like raising a child well, showing up for a friend, building a business with integrity, or being the steady one at the hospital bedside. God prepared it in advance, which means you don't have to earn your way into it.
3. You are loved before you get it right
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
Read that slowly. Not after we cleaned up. Not once we had a quiet time streak going. While we were still a mess.
So many women live as if God's love is a reward for good behavior: closer on the good weeks, a little further away on the hard ones. Romans 5:8 settles it. His love showed up at your worst, on purpose. It isn't going anywhere on an ordinary Tuesday.
4. You are not who you used to be
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” 2 Corinthians 5:17
Maybe the hardest name to shake is the one from your past. The girl who made that choice. The woman whose marriage ended. The mom who lost her temper last night. Those moments are real, and they matter. But they are not your name.
In Christ, the new has already come. Not someday, when you finally feel better. Here. That's the heart of a brighter beginning: not pretending the past didn't happen, but refusing to let it have the last word.
How to start believing it this week
Knowing what God says and actually living like it are two different things. Here are a few simple ways to close the gap:
1. Write it where you'll see it. Pick one of the four verses above and put it on a sticky note on the bathroom mirror or as your phone lock screen. Read it out loud once a day.
2. Notice the old names. When you catch yourself thinking “I'm such a failure” or “I'm too much,” pause and ask, “Who said that first?” Then answer it with what God said.
3. Ask someone who loves you. Text a friend you trust and ask, “What's one thing you see in me?” Sometimes God uses other people to remind us of what He already put there.
4. Pray it back to Him. Try: “Lord, You made me on purpose, You made me for something, You love me as I am, and You are making me new. Help me believe it today.”
You don't have to do this alone
If the old names have been loud for a long time, it can help to have someone in your corner who will keep pointing you back to the truth. That's exactly what we do here at A Brighter Beginning, in our Miami space or virtually.
